What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, or gingivitis, is an infection that attacks the tissues and bones around the teeth. In its early stages, gingivitis only affects the gums and soft tissue around the teeth. In its advanced stages, periodontal disease spreads below the gums and damages the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Dr. Sonny Afshar and Fara Afshar are proud to treat gingivitis in Roseville, California!

What causes periodontal disease?

Gum disease occurs when bacteria from plaque form on your teeth and gums. The bacteria feed on the sugars from food and beverages you consume and produce toxins and other chemicals. These toxins irritate your gums, which causes them to swell, become tender, and bleed easily when you brush and floss. As time passes, plaque can harden into a buildup called tartar. This further irritates the gums, causing them to pull away from your teeth.

How is periodontal disease treated?

Professional teeth cleanings, in which plaque and tartar are removed from your teeth above and below the gum line, can be performed to treat periodontal disease. Our dentists may recommend that you have a cleaning more than twice a year. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning process that is performed if you have plaque under your gums. Your teeth are cleaned above and below the gum line and your tooth roots are made smooth. This makes it harder for plaque to stick to them.
