The Importance of Regular Checkups
The American Dental Association recommends a checkup at least twice a year. There are two parts to a regular dental visit — the checkup and the cleaning.
The Checkup — During your checkup, we will check for cavities and may take x-rays to help us look at areas that can’t be seen by the eyes alone. But your oral health includes more than your teeth. We’ll also check your gums and look for signs of oral cancer. We check your neck, jaw, and lymph nodes, and look for any swelling, lumps, or other abnormalities. For many, this may be one of the few times they are checked, and it could be lifesaving.
We can also help keep bad habits in check. Grinding your teeth, chewing ice or fingernails, brushing too hard, smoking, and consuming drinks like coffee and red wine can all affect your teeth, and the effects can be seen during a regular exam. We can inform you about destructive habits so you can modify your lifestyle to prevent further damage — as well as fix any damage already caused to prevent it from becoming worse.
The Cleaning — Even with the most conscientious brushing and flossing, there will be areas where plaque can build up and harden into tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dental professional during an office visit. It’s important to prevent tartar buildup as it can erode teeth and is a leading cause of gum disease.
The Importance of Regular Checkups
Busy schedules and budgeting may make it seem like skipping dental checkups and cleanings isn’t a big deal. However, it is often said that prevention is the best medicine. Oral issues can develop and progress quickly, often without you even noticing. We are trained to catch problems before they can develop into more serious — and costly — issues. Early detection is also often the key to getting effective treatment.
Don’t suffer like Washington did. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily, and be sure to see us for regular checkups and cleanings to help avoid future oral health issues. When was your last checkup and cleaning? Call us to set up an appointment now!
And, by the way, Washington’s dentures were not made of wood! That’s a story for another day.
Best,
Dr. Fara Afshar
