The Calming Effect of Sedation Dentistry
Are you afraid of going to the dentist’s office? If so, the overwhelming majority of Americans are just like you. Despite all the advances that have been made in dentistry to make a visit faster, safer, more efficient, and more comfortable, 75% of us experience some anxiety, with 10% having such a strong dental phobia that they avoid going to the dentist completely.
There are many reasons someone might be intimidated by the dentist, including a fear of needles or drills, previous traumatic experiences at the dentist office, and more. Unfortunately, avoiding your visits can mean that small oral health problems today can become far more serious issues in the future. There is a solution that allows you to get the dental treatment you need while relieving you of your stress and worry. It’s called sedation dentistry.
How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?
Oral sedation, the technique we use at Star Dental, is one of the most commonly used in the United States today to ease dental fear. This is also called conscious sedation because oral sedation is not used to put you into a deep sleep like anesthesia. Instead, the sedation is used to relax and soothe you.
With oral sedation, you’ll be given a pill to take the night before your appointment that will begin the calming process. When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be given small doses of additional sedatives, so you’ll be totally relaxed and at ease during the procedure and less aware of the sounds, smells, and discomfort you may associate with a dental visit. You’ll come out of your dental procedure feeling refreshed, with a beautiful and healthy smile. And, with oral sedation, there won’t be any long-lasting effects on your system. You will, however, need to have a driver take you to and from your appointment.
A big advantage that sedation dentistry has is that time seems to pass quickly, even though the procedure takes the normal amount of time. This makes oral sedation dentistry not only the answer to your anxiety issues, but also the solution if you have problems sitting for any length of time or for time-consuming, complex procedures that would otherwise require multiple visits.
